Ben Betsalel is an artist working at a crossroads of humanitarian action, climate change, and the human impact of sport. His explorations take form through drawing and painting, themed-based series of portrait happenings, a variety of written communications, and video.
Betsalel has lived and worked abroad since 2008, in countries such as Senegal, Ethiopia, Colombia, Switzerland and France. Bringing the creative process into the field, he often works in collaboration, beyond the four walls of a studio.
Since 2014, Betsalel has been intermittently collaborating with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), conducting series of portrait happenings that personalize abstract humanitarian themes such as missing and detention (Colombia, 2014 and 2015), and internal displacement due to conflict in Central African Republic and Chad (2018-2019). The output of these projects has been a part of awareness campaigns, online platforms, traveling replica installations, and multi-media exhibitions in conjunction with press events and panel discussions.
Betsalel studied drawing and painting at Savannah College of Art and Design (USA 1999-2000), water based painting and printmaking at University of Chester (U.K. 2002) and is a 2004 Research Scholar graduate of the University of North Carolina-Asheville (USA) with a BA in drawing and painting. His work has been exhibited in Asheville, North Carolina (USA) Washington D.C, Geneva, Paris, Bogota and Dakar. He is currently living in Kyiv, Ukraine.
